Daikin McQuay Introduces a “Rebel” to Challenge Energy Efficiency Status Quo
Includes Industry First Variable Heat Pump with Auxiliary Gas Heat
TORONTO – October 4-7, 2011; Greenbuild Expo, Booth #617N – McQuay International introduced today the Daikin McQuay RebelTM rooftop unit. The new unit is expected to challenge the status quo for energy efficiency at almost double of the ASHRAE 90.1 minimum standard. It will be the industry’s most energy efficient unit available, with unbeatable part-load efficiencies and superior energy savings.
The Daikin McQuay Rebel is the first official submission to a rooftop unit challenge facilitated by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop the next generation of high-efficiency air conditioners for commercial buildings. The performance features outlined by the challenge are aimed at reducing energy use by as much as 50 to 60 percent over current equipment.
The Rebel system excels in the Daikin McQuay tradition of sustainability and is expected to achieve the best IEER ratings in the industry, while functioning as an industry first Variable Air Volume heat pump unit down to three tons. In addition, the Daikin McQuay Rebel is the first packaged rooftop system to use variable heat pump technology with auxiliary gas heat, as well as, Daikin’s advanced variable inverter scroll compressor. The company credits this blend of proprietary technology for advancing the industry’s standards in commercial rooftop energy efficiency.

When functioning as a Variable Air Volume unit down to three tons, Rebel allows for better comfort control. The motors used on the fans are Electronically Commutated Motors and allow for variable speed, which reduces noise, making it not as noticeable to building occupants. The Rebel unit will be available in three to 15 ton sizes, offers a modulating hot gas reheat option, and operates efficiently in colder weather, unlike other rooftop heat pumps. These benefits help make the Rebel rooftop unit ideal for low rise commercial buildings such as schools or office buildings and as a dedicated outdoor air system, provides energy efficient make-up air for 100% outdoor air applications.
The Daikin McQuay Rebel is one of three industry-leading technologies unveiled this fall to challenge the status quo. It is part of a company-wide movement to deepen market dominance globally by also becoming clearly number one in the Americas. Other new technologies include the Daikin McQuay SmartSourceTM water source heat pump with the industry’s first variable-speed inverter, which boasts energy efficiency ratings unreachable by competing technologies. As well as the Daikin McQuay VisionTM Plus air handler, which offers one of the lowest leakage rate in the industry with the ability to attain a maximum of Class 6 leakage up to +/-8’’ of internal static per ASHRAE’s 11 Standard, well under the industry standard for one percent.
